Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has stated that within the next six months, the prices of electric vehicles (EVs) will become equivalent to petrol cars. He made this announcement during the 32nd Convergence India Expo and 10th Smart Cities India Expo. He emphasized that the government's focus is on making the country import-independent, cost-effective, pollution-free, and self-reliant in production.
EVs to gain new momentum
Gadkari stated that India is moving towards a revolutionary transformation in the automobile industry. The government is implementing various policy reforms and subsidy schemes to promote electric vehicles.
He said, “Due to the government's efforts, there has been a significant reduction in EV battery costs. This will lower the overall cost of electric cars, and in the next six months, these vehicles will be available at prices comparable to petrol cars.”
Government schemes and initiatives
The Indian government is working on several initiatives, including the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) scheme. Under this scheme, subsidies are being provided for the purchase of electric vehicles. Additionally, efforts are being made to strengthen charging infrastructure.
Nitin Gadkari also mentioned that the country is promoting projects related to green hydrogen, ethanol, and bio-CNG. He said, “Our goal is to make India a leader in clean and self-reliant energy.”
Update on Delhi-Dehradun Expressway
Gadkari also provided an update on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. He stated that the construction of this expressway will be completed within the next three months, reducing the travel time to 2.5 hours.
Benefits for consumers and the environment
Experts believe that the reduction in EV prices will lead to a surge in EV sales. This will not only reduce dependence on oil imports but also help in curbing air pollution. Additionally, consumers will benefit from long-term savings, as the operational costs of electric vehicles are significantly lower compared to petrol and diesel cars.
With this statement from Gadkari, it is now clear that India is on the verge of an EV revolution. It will be interesting to see how the automobile market evolves in the next six months.
